Pregnant women with epilepsy (PWWE) experience higher levels of depression and anxiety during pregnancy and postpartum.
Why this matters
High rates of major depressive episodes (MDE) are prevalent in patients with epilepsy. However, there is limited evidence on depression and anxiety during pregnancy and postpartum in PWWE.
The finding that pregnancy and postpartum increases psychiatric symptoms in women with epilepsy suggests close monitoring for depression or anxiety in this period is warranted and should form part of perinatal assessments.
